The term ATEX derives from “ATmospheres” and “EXplosibles” and refers, in fact, to the explosive atmosphere, or a mixture with air, at certain atmospheric conditions, of flammable substances in the state of:
- gas
- vapors
- mists
- dust
Electrical installations in hazardous locations have specific characteristics to make them suitable to operate in such atmospheres. The IEC and EN regulations regulate the use of equipment in classified environments and are constantly evolving.
The latest approved regulations introduce the concept of “equipment protection level” called EPL, allowing the use of “risk assessment” in selecting the aforementioned equipment in potentially explosive environments.
The equipment protection level (EPL) is an indicator of the risk of explosion that the equipment may have, regardless of the protection method chosen relative to the classified installation area.
